Letting Go

Fire burns at your heels and a bridge starches out before you
Run or burn?
Screams of those that stayed behind and of those that lead the way
Run fast.
The smell of burning flesh behind you and around you
Trip along the way
The wall that stands tall at the end blocking your view
Fire still at your heels
Climb or burn?
Hopeless cries of the ones that tried but failed.
Climb quickly
Reaching up over crumbling bricks just to hear the echo
Scraps all over
Pushing yourself over the edge to see the carnage of those before you
Fire still at your heels
Stay or run?
Pitiful pleas of help from beyond seamier in your ears
Stay not here
Moving fast between their bodies and watch out for their hands
Look at the children
Seeing the end so close that you nearly trip off the ledge
Fire still at your heels
Down or burn?
Inching downwards towards hell’s pits the burning flesh stings your eyes
Let no tear pass
Catching arms and legs of those that could not return you see the end
Fire at your hands
Fall or stay?
Letting go with the last you drift back into the wind
Ashes cover you
Arms spread wide you fall back into the earth
Fire here
Let it consume you and let the screams be heard over the crackling fire’s roar
Fire all around you
Eyes are closed as the world is engulfed in this eternal flame
Skin burns
Passing through the heat the air in your lungs has gone and nothing is to be done
Live or die?
Author's Notes: It came to me in a dream at a rough part of my life. I awoke frightened but it only helpped me make the choice. I choose to live.
