Forgotten Paramount

by Azurite Phox
 Age Group: Adult

If it was not being born to dream, Then it was being born to venture. Across the country one may go, Yet, across seas is even better.
Bringing my culture to the media And performing for the kings. My name was changed for the stage, And from there, my life began to spring.
Verified are journeys I encountered By Ms. McBride and a silent film of proof. Traditions are sewn into my Indian dolls; Which are found under the Smithsonian roof.
In many suns, there came adversity, So, all that was left was my island home. My heritage continued through my art, But my famous work no longer showed.
Though some stars remain invisible… It’s true what is said when they die. You probably never heard of me, however, But Paramount Pictures might know why.
With bells around my ankles, And with feathers in my hair; I was this dark-eyed dancer Whose beauty matched my flair.
Author's Notes: Wrote this April, 2011. One of my favorite poems that I had to write for my English class. This is about Molly Spotted Elk. She was a famous Penobscot Indian in the 1920s who grew up on an island off the coast of Maine. However, she later faded from the Hollywood scene and the silent films she starred in became lost in the Paramount Studios. Molly is my idol because I aspire to be a well-known American Indian female entertainer like her. You can read more about Molly by simply typing her name "Molly Spotted Elk" into any web-based search engine.
