The Lament of the Summer Sun King

Alas the Sun no longer climbs so high
It is on it’s way back down
Though the Moon grows brighter with each phase
Until She’s full and round
The closer that She comes to Earth
The farther the Sun retreats
And takes with it the strength lent me
By the torrid Summer’s heat.
For the Summer brought me a crown
And lifted my spirits with song
It was so good I should have known
It would not last for long
Love, like Summer, has had its day
And fades like a red rose to brown
The fading light, a promise of tomorrow
Kisses the trees as the Sun goes down.
Though the Sun will rise tomorrow
It will not be quite so high
As the days cool off and the water chills
I breathe a heavy sigh
For I am the Summer Sun King
And my rule is already set
My lady already looks yonder
Towards the Winter’s Fool well met.
Though she is swollen now with child
The promise of my seed’s fruition
I fade and whither like a starving vine
Drained dry by the Sun’s volition.
What fed me now destroys me
I grow weaker as each day passes
Soon my body will die and be laid to rest
Among the dying summer grasses.
I am the Summer Sun King
And I am your brightest joy
Until the Solstice when the Lady brings forth
Another Golden boy.
