Song of Autumn

There's a change in the air
The songs always say
It's the time of year
That summer fades away
A brisk little breeze
On a brilliant cloudless day
It's the wind in the willows
And it has a lot to say
For the Lady mourns the passing
Of her Summer Lord struck down
In one hand she holds the last sheaf of grain,
In the other a golden crown
Her King has passed
And with him Summer days
It is left to her to go on
And face the Autumn blaze
The slowing of the Wheel
The dimming of the dawn
The lengthening of the darkness
As the summer's heat is gone
Alone She walks the fields
Among the furrows bare
And offers it her tears
For her lover buried there.
The swell of life weighs heavy
As she walks on alone
And soon her heavy burden
Makes her turn for home
The deepness of the Earth
Will shelter her travail
Until on Solstice Night
A new King is hailed.
She knows nothing of ending
She will never die
Her father, lover and son
Say nothing but good-bye
And so her journey goes
As it has always went
She loves and nurtures life
To see it all well spent
Her gift is life and reunion
Which lies at life's end
But She remains untouched
By Time's relentless hand.
Her lonely days draw shorter
As her time comes to retire
To the deep womb of Earth
To replenish her Fire
Time begins anew
Its passing hands reversed
As to sleep She finally falls at last
Night into Day is birthed.
For the Light will always fade
With Autumn's song so sweet
And the Light will wax again
When Springtime finds its feet
Spring will come dressed in leaves of green
And seeds from the brown earth rise
The Solstice child is now a Youth
As he meets the Maiden's eyes.
And she beckons him to walk beside
As she touches root, stem and flower
And coaxes him once again
Into her hidden bower.
The Wheel will ever turn
As long as They shall meet
And that is the secret this time of year
Held in Autumn's song so sweet.
