A Prayer for Relief

Beneath the Summer’s Sun
The Earth below dries like parchment
The grass crinkles like matchsticks
Waiting for a flame.
None will debate the necessity of fire
It cleanses and transforms and brings new life
But even more blessed are the life-giving rains
When they do not wash away the lives they sustain.
We spend our seasons trapped it seems
Winter and Summer, but no Spring or Fall
Are we doomed to lie here this way
Trapped between two extremes?
Why should the gods listen to lazy people
Who rape and pillage and take more than their needs?
Who forever damage more than their worth ?
The body calls renegades like this “cancer’.
That’s what we are and no more than we deserve
For ruthlessly pillaging our only home for greed
Thoughtlessly reproducing to consume always more
More, we ask for, but now we ask for less.
Less heat from the Sun to preserve what we have
Less flooding to preserve our livelihood
And Mother says, “Make up your mind!”
You have life, it is but what you make of it.
Very well then Mother, send the rain, soak the Earth
Send the Sun, grow the gardens
We ask only that they be in moderation…
And dare we promise to try and learn that lesson…moderation?
Author's Notes: This season we skipped Spring entirely and went straight into summer. The first time I could remember there being temps in the nineties for more than a week, nearly three in fact - in May. Two years ago it was in the nineties in March...and then a quick freeze killed off all the new growth.
This is too much for 'season creep'. This is made worse by what we do. All over the world. It's up to us to change. Not JUST one...but maybe one BY one, if we change, we can stop this world from slinging us off.
