A Ray

by Nathaviel
 Age Group: Adult

I'm not sure that this falls under "pagan" poetry, but in a sense it does for me. I wrote this for my father, Allen Ray Morris, for Father's Day (thus the title A Ray) . He died when I was young (8 years old to be exact) , and the last conversation I had with him he promised to take me fishing, just the two of us. His death was hard, but it taught me a new way of looking at death... in a more natural sense of everything changing energy and form as well as a spiritual connection to something more.
The boy awakes when first the sun through blinds does cast a ray, Reaching for a tackle box and pole to fish this day. He finds the lake and waits a while and gets a little sad. A fishing trip together was the promise of his dad. The boy though fishes all alone and wonders what went wrong, As tears of sorrow trickle down his face the whole day long. When at last the sun has set and he must travel home, Waiting for his father still, his eyes to heaven roam. “Did you see the fish I caught? I hope I made you proud.” But only silence follows, only moves a single cloud. The years go by and though a man, a child still at heart, Wishes that his dad could play, in his life a part. He lies awake and wonders when he’ll see his father’s face, And remember how it felt within his warm embrace. Again the sun awakes the man and greets him with a ray, And something new occurs to him upon this Father’s Day. That last promise seemed so broken, when he was but a boy, As he cast his plastic pole for it was surely just a toy. A ray awoke him on that day and each and every since In past and present he was there… and shall be in future tense. In his mind the boy returns unto that secret lake, And now he knows that promise, his dad did not forsake. “Did you see the fish I caught? I hope I made you proud.” Though only silence follows, his dad smiles from the cloud.
