The Willow Weeps

by Nathaviel
 Age Group: Adult

The willow weeps, upon a bed, of shadows ‘neath the moon, That dance upon the water waves to sounds of a bassoon. A drop of dew, it trickles down: a tear from out the core Of an elder weeping willow weeping for the days of yore. With her seeping branches weeping in the gentle wind, A widow weeps...a lover lost… an oak they took to rend. The dawn it comes, and in the trees, the birds awake with life, But our sadly weeping willow, she knows nothing more than strife. I ask the weeping willow, “Why exactly do you weep?” “I weep for mortals gather now my kindred so to reap.” I look upon this widow...Now could she really mean? Truly is she weeping, or is this really just a dream? I awake, within the morn, emerging from the deep, And out my frosty window… well I see a willow weep. I scurry ‘cross, the dampened grass, and look upon her face, Reaching out my arms to her… to hold in my embrace. Oh my weeping widow, I’m so sorry for the theft… We took from you a lover, and so few of yew are left. The needled pine, a gentle fir, I never understood. You lost another loved one when we took that old dogwood. ‘Neath a weeping willow, as the daylight turns to dark, I weep beside a widow to the sing-song of a lark. I wander back, and on my path, I cross an angry ash. He’s only useful to us now if he can bring us cash. An apple tree, a poplar too….if only they would speak. Go to them now, with open arms, forgiveness we should seek. Ask a weeping willow soon “Why is that you weep?” “I weep for mortals gather now my kindred so to reap.”
