A Shaman's Journey

Age Group: Adult
Upon a forest path I tread,
In shadows of the moon.
In truth I knew not where it led,
Or if it ended soon.
Along the path I heard a sound,
Like hooves with steady beat.
I came onto a clearing round,
And stayed my weary feet.
In silver light, of moonlit sky,
There stood an oddly sight:
A hornéd man, and in his eye,
The darkness of the night.
Slowly I approached him,
And kneeled in reverence due.
Fires raised about the rim,
A circle! And I knew…
The visions raced within my head,
As I stared into a pool,
Of water churning… turning red,
And there I saw a fool.
Quickly though he faded,
And dawned a druid robe.
Then I anticipated,
He moved around the globe.
Time was moving backwards,
So death was never clear.
But he was moving forwards,
And birth was always near.
The man became a child,
That rested in the womb.
He was a falcon wild,
‘Fore it became his tomb.
The falcon though was resting,
Upon another’s arm.
Merlin always shifting,
And changing with a charm.
He drank from but a cup,
Then grail and cauldron too.
So from the pool, I took a sup,
And then and there I knew…
The flames they started spinning,
Like flames about the pot.
The pool was ever stirring,
With wisdom I knew not.
To partake of its wisdom,
Would surely be a death:
An apple from a kingdom,
Upon a sinner’s breath.
The serpent he is cunning,
And though he may be bound,
Constantly he’s stirring,
The pot as it goes round.
If you drink now from it,
Remember whence you came.
In black holes do we plummet,
Like angels to the flame.
Always we are longing,
To taste of something more.
All the while belonging,
To all that came before.
Always look behind you,
If home you truly seek.
The fool... he journeys onward,
Then wonders why he’s weak.
If you journey forwards,
Then No Thing will you find,
That wasn’t there when backwards,
You go within your mind.
