Gaian Vow

Oh Great Goddess,
Source of all who live
Your children are sorely grieved
For mankind has used up all your gifts
And laid waste to the seas.
Great Mother Goddess,
She who is,
I hear your strangled cry
We have your blood upon our hands
We feel your flesh run dry,
Great Mother, Breath of all who breathe
We feel your breast, it heaves
For concrete streets have smothered you
And they’ve cut down all the trees.
Great Mother, Lover of my soul
I feel your anger rise
Soon storms and quakes will rule the day
And all who waste shall die.
All children of the Mother
Hear the Earth She calls to you
We must stop her constant rape
We must do all we can do.
Great Goddess,
Mother Earth we vow
To turn the oceans tides
So the air is once more safe to breathe
And the trees soar towards the sky.
Author's Notes: This was written in late fall 1999. I don't remember the inspiration exactly, but it had something to do with the protests in Seattle at the WHO Summit.
