The Why What How When and Who of Being Wiccan

by Atlas
 Age Group: Adult

Let me ask you a few questions. Why are you here? Right now, looking at this article, on this website – why? Is it because you’re a Wiccan? Okay, that makes sense, but let me ask you something else.
What makes a Wiccan? Is it your year and a day of studying or perhaps you simply agree with the basic ideas behind Wiccan philosophy? Does having an altar with all your tools make you a Wiccan? Does keeping a book of shadows with all your thoughts, rituals and spells allow you to be able to go by that title?
I’ve studied Wicca on and off for almost five years now. If there’s anything I’ve learned while during this time, it’s that this religion doesn’t adhere you to a comprehensive set of laws and regulations that must be followed without question. There will always be different ways to do things and different opinions to go along with them, so what does this mean for one interested in this path?
Well for starters, it means that I cannot answer any of the questions stated in this article. Not with relevance, anyway. What I’m talking about is the concept of relativity. The answer to all these questions is relative to the one asking them. No one else in the entire world can tell you what to think. They can try and give you guidance and point you in the right direction (hopefully) , but they can never give you an answer that is truly and utterly relative to what you will inevitably perceive to be a Wiccan.
We’ve covered the “Why?” and the “What?”, now let’s ask the question “How?”. How do you become a Wiccan? Honestly, I think the best answer anyone can give another regarding this question is rather simple. Experience. That is something that no one else can give you. It must be earned by trial and error. At some point, reading about Wicca will not cut it. You have to live it. Feel it.
This is something that I’m struggling with at this very moment. I was an Atheist for about seven years before I stumbled into this path. During that time, I had no concept of faith or spirituality. Now I have to learn how to have a connection with my spiritual side, to have a relationship with the Divine. But even now, I still don’t feel as though I can truly call myself Wiccan, even after being on the path for nearly five years. Which brings me into the next question, “When?”.
When can one consider him or herself a true Wiccan? Is it after years of study or perhaps after one develops a sincere relationship with the Divine? As I said before, these questions are relative to the one asking. Only you can truly determine when you are ready to accept the hard-earned title of Wiccan.
The final question I have to ask is “Who?”. After all this time, all this trial and error – who are you, truly? Are you Wiccan? Are you simply a man or woman? Are you a good person? Or are you something else entirely? All this, as always, is up to you do determine.
We live in a society that begs for answers at every turn. But the real issue isn’t always the answer, but more often the question. So here’s a bonus one just for fun. I’ll even answer this one for you, but remember, it’s really just one man’s opinion.
What have you learned from this article?
Question everything, my friends.
Blessed Be.
