On Samhain

by Robert the Red
 Age Group: Adult

The hour is late in our dance of the year, As leaves gold and crimson take flight, Our kinsmen grow dearer, and we draw them nearer, As we wait for the bumps in the night.
For now it is Samhain, the Days of the Dead, when those gone across may look home, Now we look to the fires for what lies ahead, and welcome those souls who still roam.
Come to me, my lover, and let's start a blaze, a bonfire against the frost, to warm and sustain us, a light in the haze, a beacon back home for the lost.
Do not fear, my lover, the wandering shades, but welcome them with bread and ale. Til Summerland's call them, and loneliness fades, they still need our love, and our weal.
For ghoulies and ghosties, in all of their hosties, are Children just like you and me, Of the Mother and Father, for all of their bother, and some kindness just might set them free.
Come to me, my lover, and let's start a blaze, a bonfire against the frost, to warm and sustain us, a light in the haze, a beacon back home for the lost.
A candle of passion, our love now alights, in hopes that we'll ward away ill, Like pumpkins that smile in the dark of the night, And banish our fear's grimmest chill.
So kiss me, my lover, and let's give them hope, As the Wheel of the Year turns again, Our love is their love this night of all nights, A gate to the Summer we'll spin.
Come to me, my lover, and let's start a blaze, A bonfire against the frosts, to warm and sustain us, a light in the haze, a beacon back home for the lost.
Waken oh, waken, my heart and my dear, the first light of morn fills the skies, Showing the Summerland's road to the lost, and the fires of life in your eyes.
The new day's now dawning, and despite our yawning, Our nights work seems to be done, For the cock still is crowing, and cattle are lowing, A new year, it seems, has begun.
