An old tree obscured my view.
It was sick, it was twisted,
Its leaves a yellowish hue.
I waited for it to die
But it held on day out
By and by
So I took an axe to its bough,
Cut it down.
Fallow field did I plough.
Now I stare at an unfettered view.
It is wide, it is empty,
Why is it older than new?
It wasn’t sick, that old tree,
I know that now.
It was only me.
Author's Notes: Like all poems, this work could be interpreted in several ways. Most people think I'm making a comment about the destruction of the environment. To some small degree I am, but it goes much deeper than that. People have a tendency to destroy the old in favor of whatever is expedient and/or politically correct at the time. I view the rape of ancient Pagan cultures by my peers to be a similiar destructive act. Our so-called community has been transformed into an all-you-can eat spiritual buffet where things are just tossed together haphazard without concern for history, paradigm, or value. In embracing everything convenient we end up with nothing.
