Immrama

by Fionn
 Age Group: Adult

The darkened road beneath me wound A spiral path that twisted 'round The Moon the only light I found Dead or lost I seemed
The trail meandered on and on Amidst the forest, darkly drawn A midnight journey without dawn Seemingly I dreamed
The silence was complete, I heard No sound of wind, nor beast, nor bird No single, unremembered word E'er to speak to me
I wandered on beneath the Moon Which hung there like a silent tune Like some eternal mystery rune - Then I saw the Tree
It blocked my path, a sentinel A guardian mute, who would not tell Exhausted, at its feet I fell Weary, cold and spent
Immense and dark, amazing high Its trunk soared upward to the sky Where tattered, Moonlit clouds flew by On and up it went
Its far-off branches clutched the night Caressed the stars and broke the light Of She who gazed down, shining white Whispers of my birth
My hand reached, trembling, touched its bark The contact shocked me like a spark Its massive roots spread wide and dark Deep they drank the Earth
And as I gazed down, filled with awe My eyes grew wide as there I saw A black hole, like a gaping maw There beneath the Tree
And then, most wondrous thing of all From those blank depths I heard a call A distant voice behind a wall Beckoning to me
The voice filled all my soul with fear Yet drew me, unresisting, near And faint yet clearly I could hear Someone call my name
Without will I began to crawl Into that deep and shadowed hall Like birth-pangs squeezed, the hole so small Whisp'ring that I came
I could not see, but felt it well The Tree's heart and each woody cell Its blood-sap singing as I fell Crying out to me
Amidst the tendril'd roots I crawled So tightly held and pressed and walled And downward, where the voice still called Calling, soft, to me
And endless then it seemed to me My journey in the dark to be Would I descend eternally? Still I had no choice
But then, at last, deep down below I saw a light, a dim faint glow Approaching closer, yet so slow - Clearer came the voice
Then finally, when my strength was spent I squeezed out through a ragged rent The roots above me like a tent There I fell, new-born
I slowly stood and gazed around A cavern far beneath the ground Its walls glowed dim - there was no sound Far from Sun and morn
I stood there, shiv'ring in the glow Of gem-lit walls, so far below Who called me there I did not know No one did I see
But then I saw off in the gloom A shadowed figure in the room As cold and silent as the tomb Slowly move toward me
A hooded figure, grim and spare A sight which caused my heart to tear I stood transfixed, could only stare Felt cold eyes on me
The hood fell back, my mind was seared A white-cold woman's face appeared Her dark eyes held what I most feared Burning silently
My body, mind and soul held fast "Who are you - who?" I gasped at last Then smiling slow, she spoke at last "Brother - I am thee"
She thrust her hands into my soul I felt the heavens shake and roll I shouted, screamed without control - And woke beneath the Tree
