The Poet's Opus

Reality isn’t simple, poet.
Love and pain mingle
in life’s overture.
(It’s seldom they do not.)
You know this, yet,
pen notes in discord.
Are you tone-deaf, poet?
You scribe in tongues,
recording love as flowers,
pain a leper, serenading
exclusivity in stanzas,
lyrics bereft of wisdom.
Watch your words, poet.
Love is just treble,
pain simply bass?
No, the symphony is both!
Don’t just sing of love,
simply croon of loss!
You are a composer, poet!
The orchestra’s more
then a sopranic piccolo
or heavy double bass.
You desire an opus?
Make both your music!
Author's Notes: I wrote this after reviewing and critiquing a fair amount of prose dealing with the usual subjects, but no one having the guts to deal with love and loss at once. Though not "pagan", I felt it pertinent to life as a whole.
