Asking Counsel

Age Group: Adult
Smoky ribbons dance, eel-like skyward,
Red-tinged by the ember's glow.
Light, in pinpricks, flickers and flashes,
Traverse the starfields in my head.
To the drum of my heart beating,
Feel their warmth as they draw near.
Orange-limned, in ember light haloed,
Smile and nod as they sit down.
Youngest, I, to sit this council,
Petition for aught to light my path.
Hearing their sage counsel given,
Talk until the night has passed.
Quietly, 'ere dawn's light shining,
My elders rise to take their leave.
Another lined face nods, then fades,
Left here, last, to cast my thoughts.
Beholden for the gift they gave me,
Another piece of what they ken.
Back, I pull the me of dreaming,
Eyes, opened to the incense glow.
Out, I put the burning candle,
Thankful for it's guarding light.
Gently put away my scryer,
Now I've seen the wise ones' eyes.

Author's Notes: Thoughts as I was writing this: "Sometimes I kinda replay the memories I have of my role models. My maternal grandfather (Grampaw) , my uncle Said, and Bishop John Walker... ofttimes I even hold conversations with them...thought hard about how they would react to this situation or how they'd handle that problem. Even feeling their presence and warmth around me. The faces I knew, loved and respected before they crossed. Like some clan counsil, sitting around the light of the canoun (A berber, earthenware brazier) while the mountain winds whipped the starts about in a frenzy!"
