Mourning Me

by Aithne Obsidian Sky
 Age Group: Adult

Under the ancient Banyan tree They hatched a plan to bury me It wasn't because I'd been found dead But because I'd been found a murderess instead.
The murder wasn't really my fault, you see He'd lied, cheated, and beaten me, yet would not set me free I wanted him dead, let that thought be known But the knife did the work; had a life of it's own!
I stood in the doorway where he slept in the dark The judgment rose up in me, the anger quite stark Suddenly the room was filled with bright red My handprints a bloody contrast on the white sheeted bed
I looked up in surprise at the knife in my hand In shock, my head spinning, I could barely stand Somehow I stumbled from the spinning, red room Flinging the knife away, fearing my own doom...
The door left standing open as I fled into the night I ran through the woods, guided by the moonlight I found myself huddled under the ancient tree Where I sought shelter; where they found me
As the village men dragged me to the hole in the ground I couldn't scream or fight, because I was bound I looked to the heavens to seek some reprieve But the angels turned their heads away in defeat
I closed my tear-filled eyes as the dirt covered me In my mind, my children's faces, my last memory No time to reconsider: was I right or was I wrong? As my soul was tossed into eternity headlong...
Now my soul wanders restlessly on this cold, dark earth I yearn for the innocence bred from my birth Yet the end holds no hope, a dream viewed from afar A final chance to rest, to heal from these scars
Is the battle over? Has a fight for truth been won? Was justice truly meted out under the old Banyon? Was I truly the villain in this tragic familiar scene? Would I be the last victim buried under this tree so serene?
