Outside the Dance

I sit and I watch,
Ever on the outside.
Hearing others speak,
But never invited inside.
Ever unhappy,
Ever alone,
Ever waiting for a chance
To try to join the dance.
Hidden in plain sight,
Like the wary fox.
Seeking the way in,
The way past the locks.
Ever without,
Ever lacking,
Ever wanting that chance,
When asked to join their dance.
The door remains closed.
Outside their world,
I stand alone in shadow,
Along a different fold.
Ever bizarre,
Ever unknown,
Ever straining for the chance,
To learn the steps of the dance.
But my steps don’t follow,
The complicated pattern,
As they flit all around,
And I find it hard to learn.
Ever ungainly
Ever unbalanced
Unable to take the chance
To be part of their world’s dance.
Longing for something
But what I don’t even know,
And though I always seek union,
I am always all alone.
Author's Notes: Have you ever been in a room and heard other people there talking about what they're going, where they're going to go... And they shout at someone across the room and say, "Hey why don't you come too?" But you know their not talking to you. They're never talking to you...
