What is...?

Age Group: Adult
The old line says,
“Beauty is in the eye
Of the beholder.”
But what is
Beauty?
Is it the skin?
Is it the soul?
Should it be either
Or should it be both?
Who can answer that?
I cannot.
I know not.
I see myself
Everyday.
The mirror shows me,
As I see me.
Yet many say I am beautiful.
What do they see?
And why do they?
What beauty can I hold,
That I cannot recognize?
I long to accept them,
Their words,
Yes,
Even their touch.
But I shy away,
Afraid.
I cannot agree,
Thus I pull back.
Some days
I cannot even stand the touch
Of my closest companions.
I retreat,
Ever back,
Ever away.
What flaw do I hold
That makes me this way?
And will I ever know
Why some find me
Cute?
Pretty?
Why some long to be with me
When I cannot stand
To be near them.
An unending question
This seems to be.
Ever circling
In my mind,
In my soul.
I hope,
One day,
I can be me,
Accepting of them,
And of myself.
But that day never seems to come.
Forever may not be
Long enough.
What is Beauty?
What is it,
In me?

Author's Notes: I guess this one seems to be kind of odd... Kind of self-serving. But it is a question I constantly ask myself. I don't know. I have no real knowledge when it comes to relationships, even though I'm already 23. I don't understand the way others think when they see someone like me. I see nothing remarkable, and yet they continually bother me. Trying, to be blunt about it, to get into my pants. Why? What's the point? If someone knows an aswer or thinks they do, I'm curious. If you just want to comment, go ahead. I'll read your words and maybe respond. Blessed be.
