This Modern World

Age Group: Adult
So long I have watched the people,
Always on the outside
Looking in at them.
Seeing how they act,
Wishing I could be like them,
But knowing I was different.
Now I wonder
If it truly is better
That I am as I am.
For the people of this world,
This sphere where Nature
Is no longer a part of our daily lives,
Is full of Violence,
Of Prejudice and of Hate.
I watch as the people
Hurt others and themselves.
And I weep that peace is so far away.
How did this world do so far awry?
Why do people Hate so very much?
For the minor differences,
Lead to the most blood spilled.
And the populace
Surrounds itself in metal and concrete,
Losing the gentle curves of the Natural World,
For the precise bends and lines
Of the cities, factories,
Of so called civilization.
So mayhap tis better
That I am so different,
That I have always been outside,
For though I have faced the Violence,
The Hate, the Prejudice,
I have overcome it,
And accept myself as I am.
So perhaps I can return to what was,
Where Nature embraces,
And the World gently curves.
But I ask if this Modern World is better?
Might it not be sweeter here,
To live in harmony
With our fellow Wo/Men?
And with Nature?
Someday, maybe we will see,
When the cities start to die,
And the world finds peace.
I pray for those days.
May they come sooner
Rather than later,
But I fear t’will be a long time
Before my wish is fulfilled.
Till then,
I watch,
And I wait.
Always on the outside,
Looking in.

Author's Notes: I guess this is a plea... I'm saddened by the pain around me, and by the harsh straight lines of our world. For myself, I have friends of many backgrounds, cultures, colors and creeds. I find them interesting and wish them no harm for as long as they don't try to change me, I will respect them and leave them as they are. But I know so many people that don't do that, and it hurts to see the results... The beatings... The abuse... The discrimination... And the retaliation that just breeds more of the same. Mayhap I'm just another idealist, another pacifist (though I will protect myself and those I care for if threatened/attacked) . But I hope that someone will hear my words and feel the same... For the more voices that raise such a cry may be able to bring that better world all the faster! Blessed be, all of you, no matter how you pray, look or were raised. I offer my hand in friendship and caring. I only hope you don't smack it away...
