Getting Rid of Fear

by Rose'Ena Tanu

Age Group: Adult

Ever since that dream,
A horrid vision
Where Mother died from a spider’s bite,
Spiders I have feared,
Detested and hated.
But now, with my awakening,
I must face that fear.
Come to terms with the how,
The why, the what.
A new dream had I.
One where, on a covered balcony,
A giant web stretched across my way.
I woke up before the end,
The night I saw this vision.
Now I know,
I must pass through that
Webbed blockage.
For once I do,
My fear will melt away.
Spiders shouldn’t bother me further
Should I ever see that web again
And pass through its stick lines
My fear will be removed.
I will be able to accept spiders,
Simply because they are there.
Still they will make me nervous
Which is a normal reaction,
But I should no longer
Cringe from their eight-legged forms.
They are, and I am.
We live side by side.
Acceptance must come
From all for all
Or the world will crumble.

Author's Notes: When I was a kid, I had this dream... I saw this really big spider in my room (this was back in the house in New Jersey) ... My mom was helping me with something... I think I was struggling with some homework assignment. I moved to kill the spider, but my mom knocked my hand aside, which got her hand too close to the spider... It bite her... And she died... Ever since then I've been a total arachnaphobe. I can't stand spiders! *shivers* Then just a couple of nights ago, I projected myself to this cabin that has one of those wrap around covered balconies.. And there was that spider's web I describe in the poem. I woke up before I passed through it, but I've been told that if I pass through that web the next time I see it, my fear will go away. So, next time I get to that cabin, I guess I know what I have to do. I can only hope I have the courage to do it.
