I am Selkie
by Crow Tarot Lady
Age Group: Adult
The Seals swim endlessly
spiraling inward
until they somehow
break the surface.
Black onyx eyes
weep for losses
for their knowledge
for the earth
but resolve
to turn the wheel
of change.
Crows murder on the rocks
they watch
the tortured harbour seals
flap like a dead fish
until they remember
they can breathe.
They writhe
they lament
their grief transcends
bursts through skin
Transform
fins split to legs
she grows
hands a heart.
They shed their priceless
seal skins
birthing pale flesh
like Moon Mother’s milk.
they clutch pelts
that they might
keep
their cocoons,
Yet a change of covering
does not mean inward change
and big black eyes
still cry.
A secret ceremony
a private funeral
of self
Seal Woman
sings the grief of all women
bound by
memories
but still breathing.
She is familiar
with salt water
upon her face.
She is ready
to re-form,
and embracing the night
the truth
the sea
she puts her coat back on
and Sings.
