Gravity

Light and airy
we gather
wrapped in a cottony womb
riding the jet stream
borne on a slippery column of wind
over land and sea and land again
until all at once
growing heavier and larger
we are dropped
cast from heaven
over a random thirsty target
released in a swirling race to the earth.
Cool winds herald our arrival
our flight ending in a shattering hiss
a dark stain spreading
over rooftops and tree leafs
and concrete and garbage
over playgrounds and prisons
and bakeries and brothels
mixing with
sand and dust and blood and oil
and dirt from many passing feet.
And the skies clear again
And the sun reclaims those of us
the earth has failed to capture
for its own.
