The Train of Pain is Coming

In the light of day
the cold shadow is
Pulled across the night
and the chill races up my neck when I hear it,
that haunting whistle like lonely wolves
in forest dark, lost and mournful;
The train of pain is coming.
Steaming, spewing,
turning, churning,
wheels whirling,
racing, grinding,
Steel upon steel;
my stomach floats
while my heart sinks
as the ground beneath my feet
begins to shake.
The train of pain is coming.
Closer, closer it gets
screeching steel upon glowing rails;
thump, thump, thump
as it jumps butted ingots
polished and shined with
friction smelted mirror glow
the rail still warm
from it having arrived for all the others;
The train of pain is coming.
What will happen when it pulls in?
Will you board it when it stops,
and let it take you beyond my reach, beyond my sight, but for the green fairy's poison?
Would you step across the threshold of lovers doom
into a life, frigid and mechanical, against your heart
and remove from me your love ,
Your touch,
Your smile,
Your warmth,
Your light?
The train of pain is coming,
Let it go by and stay here with me,
safe in my arms.
