The Knight

The Knight
Astride his mighty charger
With armor polished bright
In sunlight blazing, larger
Approached the gleaming knight.
Within his solid armor
A symbol of his call
There burns the purest ardor
Of youth and truth withal.
Beware oh mighty champion!
In battle strong and brave,
The lance, the shield, the stallion,
Protect but do not save.
For in your mighty bastion
There lies a rueful knave--
All noble aim's companion
Which leads but to the grave.
With banners streaming brightly
And garlands at your feet
Of image ever-sightly
Disdainful of defeat
You ride with honor, constant
Defender of the realm,
With power, just and instant
Your foe to overwhelm.
Joust and you're victorious
The tourney is your game;
For lady's fair be glorious
Unmindful of your fame.
To win your lady's favor
To bridge the gap at all;
The fruits of love to savor
Your bastion's walls must fall.
By virtue's light so blinding
The wretched knave is free
To wreak his havoc, binding,
For all the world to see.
Good knight! M'lord! Awaken!
The foe is now within!
Awake! M'lord he's taken
The love that should have been!
With gleaming armor shining
Upon the velvet green,
The knight is now divining
The reason for the scene.
In field of honor, vacant,
He'll never have a try--
His wound was only latent
for here he came to die.
