Keeper Of The Barrens

by Michael

Age Group: Adult

Oct.22, 1990.
By A. Michael Kundu

An early wind, heralding the awakening of Spirit,
rises on a changing November morn.
With it comes the promise of cold, crisp, shimmering day glow;
the sweet strain of an Arctic song, echoed in the words of Innu elders who understood the sign.

In silent passage, the wind sweeps across the dreaming land,
where thoughts of warmth and blossoms are distant and forgotten, like the words of a childhood prayer,
they linger on in memory, yet seem nowhere to be found.

Turn now towards the Taiga…
They are there on the damp, mist shroaded horizon,
benignly listening to the silent promises of the Spring, and the Spirit.

As the midnight day blends into midnight day,
They taste the air, they feel its joyfulness.
They are wise: an ancient wisdom that comes only to natural things.
Their only duty is to feel the joyfulness of being
and to prepare for the awakening of Spirit, by sharing the voice of the wind.

Winter comes...

In the distant, sleeping wakefulness of your mind, you hear a familiar echo.
You rise; listen intently to hear their sweet voices again!
The primal solace of their song reaches you
and brings you from here to another dream...
a dream heretofore unknown to you, yet kindredly familiar.

You desire to join them away on the Barrens as they run and play and love...
and hear and understand with them, the wisdom of the wind.
Somewhere in the past, we where all a part of them.
This, the Innu understand.

And somewhere, where none other does walk or see,
a solitary Inukshuk reminds the Barrens of companionship.
And the Keepers still stop momentarily to ponder that figure
upon their hunt, their journey, or their time of play.
And they will understand the unspoken words of the Inukshuk...

"You are never alone"...

So you will go on to envy the Keepers,
and their way of wisdom and contentment that many of us might never understand, yet will forever still desire.

And so when the wind comes, you will welcome it,
And as the land lulls itself to sleep, you will be anxious to dream, perchance to run and play and love among them, and to be at one with them,
At one with them...
