Earthy Stars, Fiery Summer

by Lynn

Age Group: Adult

The Earth is parched and dry
In growing days she sat
In joy to meet her old friend Sun
Who, kindly, let Moon show her face
In long and snowy winter nights
But now, no more does sun’s rays hide
But beams down at the Mother earth
And they, with warm and blissful days
Sit together in the summer heat
He touches her, and she reaches to return
Her flowers bursting with new life.
And day by day they sit together
Lingering touches growing longer
His smile sends sparks across her skin
In crackling spider webs of heat and flame
They reach with overbearing love
Until the soil’s burnt and dry
And she grows weary of his touch again
Rain, my darling, where are you, she cries
The dust-soft earth of the Ellensburg night
But Rain dances with Old Man Mountain
And doesn’t hear her pleas
Rain and Mountain dance and sing
Until the rain is nearly spent
And then, laughing, she skips away,
And walks with Wind to another place
To dance again, soft Ellensburg rain
Quieter, softer, more somber then before
She greets her love the dusty earth
Who smiles up, in doleful bliss
But deep within her heart still burns
The touch received from summer suns
Her lover Rain drops the softest kiss
That never can erase his burning touch

Author's Notes: If you don't live in Ellensburg, maybe this won't make as much sense, but it's semi-arid, so even when it does rain, the earth remains cracked and dry. I was walking in the grass in the rain yesterday, and it just struck me all of a sudden how hard and unyeilding the ground was, despite the rain, so I was inspired to write this.

blessed be.
