BRIGANDS TALE

by Michael
 Age Group: Adult

BRIGANDS TALE Written as a song for the Pagan Band 'Time Gypsies', April 2011 by Michael Kundu Oh lads and lassies, sit a spell, and hear my tale of woe. Of seafarers, and scurvy dogs, and of an English foe. It all began near Liverpool, a wistful lad was I, A-search for some adventure, and a path to travel by.
I took a boatswain’s billet, on a British brigantine. But a scrappy band of scallywags stole our schooner from the Queen. To walk the plank or join the crew, my choice was made quite clear. So I dropped my pen and grabbed a sword, and joined the buccaneers!
Well – Yo! Ho! Ho! and a bottle of rum, it’s the pirate life for me! We’ll pillage ports from Senegal, north to the Irish Sea. With cutlass raised for Spanish gold, ye’ll hear our battle cry. So climb the mast, ye scurvy dogs, and hoist the sails a’ high!
We headed out of Carlisle, looting ships along the way, And prospered on the briny blue, ‘nigh 50 knots a day, But all the gold in England could not hide a sea-dog’s stench, I’d gladly trade some doubloons for a fragrant, hairless wench - Heave Ho!
Whilst burning down an Irish town, west of the Ilse of Man, I made off with a bonny lass from Kinsale, name of Anne, She drank and cussed and climbed a mast, like any man could do, She took me clothes and blunderbuss, and left with half the crew - Hey!
Yo! Ho! Ho! and a bucket of rum, it’s the pirate life for me! We’ll pillage ports from Senegal, north to the Irish Sea. With cutlass raised, for Spanish gold, ye’ll hear our battle cry. So climb the mast, ye scurvy dogs, and hoist the sails a’ high!
The Queen’s Royal Navy hunted us, that tireless brigade, We lost the fleet near Labrador, and recommenced our trade. We stormed the port of Halifax; whilst loading up our kegs, I shagged a fiery, one-legged gal, I think her name was ‘Peg’ - Ho!
Sweet Nola was a brown-eyed fox, her skin so pale and soft, I found her on the Chesapeake, whilst ‘plundering’ her loft. She tied me to her bedposts, but her knots were oddly tight, She stole me heart - and all my gold - and took off in the night - Hey!
Yo! Ho! Ho! and a Barrel of rum, it’s the pirate life for me! We’ll pillage ports from Senegal, north to the Irish Sea. With cutlass raised for Spanish gold, ye’ll hear our battle cry. So climb the mast, ye scurvy dogs, and hoist the sails a’ high!
And there’s me tale, you ragged lot, you’d think we made out right, With wine and women, gold and silk, we anchored in the night. ‘Sail ho!’ I heard me matey’s cry: ‘The British Navy’s here!’ We heard their long nines fire, and our ship was commandeered - Ho!
Sixteen men on a dead man’s chest, it’s a pirate’s death for me! Some hung like dogs at an English court, the rest were lost at sea. But the hangman’s rope won’t hold me down - I’ve nothing more to fear… I’ll sail the seas of Hell, and chase the devil’s daughters there - Hey!
Yo! Ho! Ho! and a Barrel of rum, it’s the pirate life for me! We’ll pillage ports from Senegal, north to the Irish Sea. With cutlass raised for Spanish gold, ye’ll hear our battle cry. So climb the mast, ye scurvy dogs, and hoist the sails a’ high!
Yo! Ho! Ho! and a Barrel of rum, it’s the pirate life for me! We’ll pillage ports from Senegal, north to the Irish Sea. With cutlass raised for Spanish gold, ye’ll hear our battle cry. So climb the mast, ye scurvy dogs, and hoist the sails a’ high!
