I Love You, Said the Man

by J. Sandy
 Age Group: Adult

I Love You, Said the Man
I love you, said the child-- His eyes aglow with innocence and trust, Untainted by deceit, Or the cruelty of crass neglect Borne of the memory of years.
Let's be friends, said the boy-- His face bright with smiles in anticipation Of a thousand sunny days unbounded by cares; Free to run and play, Sharing boyish secrets from his heart.
Will you be mine forever? Asked the youth-- As his blush revealed the tumult Of unfamiliar emotions which he so desperately Tried to balance with starry dreams Of an unfathomable future.
Will you marry me? Asked the young man-- In the embracing vigor of life Full of confidence and strength; As he sought a life-companion with whom to share His dreams, sure of success, under the stars.
Will you remember? Asked the man vacantly-- Torn by pain, disconcerted by loss; As he sifted through photographs, letters, and memories; Searching for a part of himself he was sure was somewhere But which, inexplicably, he could not find just then.
I love you, said the man-- And in the phrase was no promise, no concrete plan or dream; Only the realization that The child, the boy, the youth, the young man, and the stars Lived once more in the selfless innocence Of a phrase given freely from the heart.

Author's Notes: Our understanding of love and life choices change with time, and may even seem different. But, is love ever so different? Maybe the word acquires a deeper, fuller, richer meaning with experience. Whatever your age, love is, and always will be what makes life worth living. I dedicate this poem to one person in particular, and to all those who rediscover the meaning of true love, time after time! Blessed be Our Lady whose love we learn to reflect in this world.
