By the crashing of the waves
Beneath cliff sides they grieve
In the water near sea caves
Where sharp rocks strain like a sieve
Huddled in a frumpy cloister,
Each one just a lowly oyster.
Unremarkable the bunch
No one knows and no one cares.
Live for ever or till lunch
Dine al fresco unawares
On the menu or in the sea
With fungible identity.
On the pavement, moving masses
Names and numbers, each unique,
Thru the census each one passes
Young and old, dull and the chic,
Different-sized shirts each will find,
Individuals. One-of-a-kind.
At the jewelers, lovers will go.
One-in-a-million is oyster's pearl.
"Such rare beauty!" Exclaims her beau.
"Stop. I am blushing!" Answers the girl.
A theme for poems the young man spies,
While glancing, another catches his eyes.
A heart in love or in injury,
Like oyster whose pain yields a rare pearl
Blooms in a form that's sheer poetry
Surely the best with time will unfurl
For everyone else: Mere commodities;
Just some more fungible identities.
