The Hunger

by Lumière
 Age Group: Adult

There are days when I peer into the void And glimpse the fractured shards. The remains of 'before', lay scattered, Like glistening glass upon the dirt.
I begin to dig into the broken ground, Cutting myself on yesterday, Pulling the roots of a woman so full of rage, That my hands crack and bleed.
I feel the ever drumming beneath me, Taste the rich copper of blood, Feel the sweat pour down my back, As I dig my way into the void.
I feel the ebb of the earth move around me, Restless, as I carve my nails deeper down, As I reached into the soul of the dark opening before me, Demanding the return of my pieces of glass, of my shards. I do not go quietly. I do not. Hungrily, I reach in.
I’m unable to stop. I must not and I do not. I can’t and the void eventually closes around me, Chipping a bit more of me off , With it’s sharp, unforgiving edges.
But the only thing I notice is a sense of loss, The painful beating of my heart And my empty, blood crusted hands, Hovering above a grave.
The earth has taken my better half And only I now remain.
Author's Notes: This poem was written about a year ago and represents a spiritual part of my life when I felt I could not let go of the past.
In some ways, I still linger over the faint memories of my old self. I do not, however, allow the sorrow drive me to the edges of my mind where I feel I am less a person because of my losses.
I now acknowledge that, with each piece lost, another was forged and it wasn't until the break of the crest of my sharpest despair that I could come to understand this.
I hope that perhaps this poem, although dark, brings comfort to others in knowing that this burden is shared and one that represents life that blossoms from death...eventually. All the hard stuff comes first.
