A Prayer for Queer Folk
by Eric Angus
Age Group: Adult
Holy Mother, Veiled One, Creator and Destroyer, You who look after your children of the shadows, look at us. We are broken, and battered, bleeding, and dying. We are dead. Pray for us. Let us Love. Let us be Kind. Let us be Angry. Let our tears become a mighty torrent that washes away the evils of those that work against your first creation: Love.
And you, Bright Angel. Gleaming Goat. Flaming Peacock God, oh Most Glorious One. Bring down your mighty sword. Pierce the hearts of those that would attack your queer children, those whom you love, those whom you protect, those who wear your colors and dance to your thunderous, beating wings and hooves. Pierce them with the Light, that they who are so full of hatred may instead be poisoned with Love. Wrap them in the Void, that they may remember what it is like to be young and afraid, and what a blistering respite is your Light. Let them see that you are the first creation: Love.
Ancestors, Queer Ancestors, Queer gods and spirits, come now upon your children. Hold them. Love them. Protect them. Be with them. Be in their hearts, and in their hands, and on the tips of their tongues. There is no love stronger than Queer love. Ours is a love forged in fire amidst raging chaos. Ours is the love that destroys hate. Queer love is the deepest love. It is the unconditional love. It is the highest love. Hold them. Love them. Protect them. Protect our family and their allies. Help them.
I am so full of grief, o My Soul. So full of pain. O loving God that shines above me, bright, brilliant Dove, help me in this. I love you with all my being. Let our love be in every heart. Let it cascade from me like a shining star into every thing. Let not my heart turn to stone with hate. Iím so tired of hate. Iím so tired of violence. Iím so tired. Lift me up, o My Soul, that I may do our good work.
I love you all, so so so so so so much. A thousand, thousand loves to my queer family. If you are afraid, I shall hold you. If you are hungry, I shall feed you. If you are tired, I shall give you a bed. If you can not fight anymore, take a rest, and I shall lift your sword and shield. You are not alone. Ever.
AMEN. AMEN. AMEN.
Author's Notes: Iíve been trying to come up with a prayer.
Iíve been trying to come up with words. A ritual. A chant. Something. Everything falls flat. I canít come up with the poetry.
This is all I have...
