Age Group: Adult
When the night is young and the crickets come to play,
And the rest of the world sleeps away,
That's when He runs.
That's when They run.
That pack that runs together.
Living for one another.
Singing their joyous song to the harvest moon.
The moon listens to Him,
Singing happily to the night.
His pack is always with Him.
When the dawn comes, He sings His song
Once more for the harvest moon.
He retreats to His den where the rest await,
Their songs still echoing
Throughout the dawn.
The solemn song.
The world's last lullaby.
He sleeps with His song of the hunter's moon
Still singing in His head.
The daylight envelops Him in sleep
With His pack, always with Him.
He dreams His dreams of the night's hunt.
The rabbits He would chase,
Cowering in fear of their hunter.
A great hunter.
A noble warrior.
The kind, yet firm.
An angelic demon,
Doing what He must under the full moon,
The song still in His head.
Returning with His prize for the pack
Who will always be with Him.
The night returns once again
To Him, the noble wolf.
He awakens the pack, but they cannot be found.
They are gone.
All of them.
Not a single one left.
No scent in the wind.
He looks up to the ominous moon.
The song begins to haunt Him.
He runs to the moon.
Who will be with Him?
He cannot recall the song
That He sang so blissfully.
He cannot even sing a single song.
He only screams.
Howling in fury.
Baying at betrayal.
Crying from abandonment.
There is no song for the somber moon.
The songs He sang for it
Have faded, like his pack
That swore they'd be with him always.
The lonely wolf cries to the moon,
Wallowing in hopeless despair.
But then, a voice...
Some sweet voice
Sings His song.
His solemn song.
Wait, are there more?
More voices singing to the glowing moon.
The song that He used to sing.
He recognizes the voices.
They were always with him.
Even though He cannot see them,
Their cries are still enough.
Their spirits have come to Him.
They comfort Him.
Soothe His soul.
Dry His tears.
End His pain,
While singing the song to the waning moon,
Untill He, too, sings His moon song.
With the rest of the pack
Who never truly left him.
So now He runs under the stars,
Under the blanket of night.
Still hunting the rabbits,
Watching the world,
Reminiscing His past,
With His loving pack
Who run with Him,
Floating like the shining moon.
He runs through the night
With His pack by His side...
Always by His side.
Author's Notes: I wrote this ages ago for a friend of mine whose grandfather died. I felt I should have given it to him because he did so much for me and I wanted to show him that he's not alone. He has his friends.
