A Child's Innocence

by Nyx Sange
 Age Group: Adult

I look at how they act, so young and innocent, Numb to the world's cruelties, they play With toys, dolls, clothes, sticks, Making a game out of the earth. With such simplicity. And I envy them all. To them, al that matters is their world. No wars to worry about, No political corruption to debate about, No enemy countires to fight, Except in their own wars, But theirs only last until sunset, While ours carry on for years. Why do we hold these grudges And children forgive and keep playing? Because they choose to be numb. They don't know about the monster Because they don't want to. All they want to do is keep playing. They are blind to it because they know Once you see it, and it sees you, You understand and transform. You worry about the world and the evil within it. The children are afraid of the dark, So they remain in the light, Because that's where the monster lies. The monster that they never want to encounter. But once you become brave and foolish, And you venture into the darkness, And see the monster yourself, It kills you and remakes you Into something like itself. The monster puts a part of itself in you, And releases you into the world, To do it's dirty work. You may think it's only your decision, but it's not. It's its desires, its lust for power. I have been infected by the monster. I wish I could cure myself, but this virus won't ever leave. I envy the children, whose innocence still lives And keeps them pure and good. I want my innocence to return, but it never will, So I must fight the monster. I know I will lose, but I will fight to keep it under control Or die trying. This monster has infected the world, And very few people even realize it, Because their loss of innocence Has deafened the screams Of those still losing their innocence. Of those the monster attacks. Innocence is dead, at least mine is. The monster has taken me... and won
Author's Notes: I finished reading "Lord of the Flies" in British Literature and we had a huge discussion about the evil within us all and how innocence is lost. It made me think about those who still have their innocence left within them and how much I wish i was that way again.
