Photographic Embrace

by Nyx Sange

Age Group: Adult

Returning back to the days of youth,
My sister and I traveled, though our bodies had not.
The old jumgle gym we played in before our teens
We wandered to it and played.
We talked about a future with our loves
We both agreed that we would marry
But some fears and worries flooded my mind
And I became scared.
What if I had the wrong one?
What if he isn't my destiny.

I asked my sister and she turned from me.
"Grandpa, " she said. "When is a good time
For girls like us to marry?"
A voice echoed frim my sister's gaze.
"I don't want you getting married before twenty-one.
Then you cand drink yourself into a party."
The voice was not what I expected.
It was not my father's, but my mother's father
And his radiant wife standing by his side.

They talked with my sister while I stared in awe
And when they left, I ran to them
With waterfalls coming from my eyes.
"Don't go!" I cried. "I want you to stay!"
And I embraced my grandfather once again.
MY tears darkened his canary polo shirt
As he hugged me back.
He led me to Grandmother
Who looked like when I last saw her
In old photographs, now seventeen years old.
She stood there with open arms
And I ran into her embrace sobbing
I nuzzled on her blue and white dress
Before they told me all I needed to know.

"Kiddo, The one who has seen and already knows
The angel within your soul,
Will take care of you for all your life.
We will let him care for you because we love you."
And they faded away into light
Along with all of my doubts and fears.

I woke up this morning and went to a picture
Of my deceased Grandparents
Holding my sister when she was born.
One tear was all it took to say what I owed them.
"Thank you. I love you too."

Author's Notes: I had this dream last night and it really meant something to me. It's the first time I remember hugging my grandmother and I'm glad for that. I'm also glad they approve of him.
