My Dearly Beloved

by Nyx Sange
 Age Group: Adult

Seven years ago, he entered my life afraid and shy. He hid under dark places to watch my world unfurl in front of him. Everytime I tried to comfort him, he scampered under beds and behind the couches. He wasn't sure who I was, so he just watched me. I watched him peacefully, gave him food, cleaned up after him, played with him if he was willing, took care of him. He was my joy.
Over time, he would come out of the dark and into my arms. I would welcome him lovingly. When I was happy, he nudged me and played with me. When I was sick, he sat by me and watched television with me. When I was sad, he would comfort me aas my tears flowed wild. I loved him for his strengths, and for his flaws, for he was not the cleanest fellow, yet I still loved him. He was my companion.
I left home today knowing that he loved me. I saw him lying there excited to see him once again when I got home. I did not say goodbye because it would imply that I would never see him again. I smiled at him and then left. Hours later, I heard my mother's voice on my cell phone. He's gone. His heart gave out somehow. I pulled over and cried, shocked and shaken that he was gone. He was my friend.
I came home and my father showed me the box. I wanted to see him one last time. I wanted to say good-bye. As he opened the box, tears cascaded down. I pet him as I did when he breathed, hoping I would feel him purring as he did so often like a broken record. But there was only stillness. His eyes resting as if he were sleeping. I wish that I had said goodbye as I left. I wish I could have pet him once more. He was my familiar.
I went out at midnight one last time. I placed my hands on his fridgid body and prayed one last time. Even though his sould las left, our hearts are still connected. They will serve as pathways to each other. When I call for comfort, he will find me and I will hear him purring again. When it is my turn to go to Summerland, I will be led right to him. Our hearts have mended together and will always be with each other. He is my dearly beloved.
Author's Notes: To my beloved cat, familiar and friend, Rocky (1999-2007) . May he rest peacefully in Summerland.
