Blue Sestina

by Eleanoir

Age Group: Adult

All I wanted was a flower
Or our initials carved in the skin
Of an old tree that was falling apart
But
All I get are my memories
Looping a broken heart song

This sounds like an angst ridden teen-age pop song
Complete with a bleeding flower
And drunken memories
Of smooth snowy skin
Against mine but
Now we lay in twin beds far apart

And even though we live apart
I know we are listening to the same song.
I’m in a new place now, but
I miss the deep blue vase with the flower
That sat next to our bed with petals as soft as baby’s skin.
These are my memories

Of a time when you were all I knew. Memories
From when I didn’t know how it felt to be apart.
I didn’t know that skin
Could sing a sweet song
To me every night. There was the fresh flower
By the bedside but

When the petals fell we knew the fairy tale ended. But
Now my memories
Have dimmed all our raised voices and all I want is the flower
With its petals to never fall apart.
I’d forgive you now, we’d sing the only song
We know and crystal tears would stain our skin,

Every time the phone rings, I feel my skin
Tingle, hoping to hear you on the other end but
It’s some one new with a sing-song
Voice to try and cheer me up. I’m making new memories
With another who is not so far apart
With out a flower

By the bed. Instead a flower on their skin
In a deep blue where their neck comes apart from their shoulder but
I know these memories can’t compare to our old eternal love song.

Author's Notes: I know this is kinda emo, but it was my first attempt at a sestina (pretty hard form of ending word structure) and pretty darn heartfelt!
