Wake Up--A Series of Haiku (Edit II)

I. The moon is burning;
the night runs through our fingers.
Are you still asleep?
II. Who tells the young ones
the wolves are not their brothers?
The howl makes us kin.
III. The wild howl binds us,
draws us deep into shadow.
We listen and wait.
IV. The wild howl binds us,
calls us grinning into night
to dance and to run.
V. The howl unites us,
rings the sky with our voices,
waking the restless.
VI. The moonlight paints us
feral shades with shining teeth.
No coy dogs are we.
VII. Hunter and hunted
we know both ways of the chase,
the flight, the fight, Death.
VIII. O wolf, my kinsman
chewing bones with wet red jaws,
remember my step.
IX. I remember yours
for who could forget that tread
behind them at night?
X. The moon is burning;
the night runs through our fingers.
Are you still asleep?
