Race for Persephone

by Deborah Voith
 Age Group: Adult

Race For Persephone
It happened once, that a woman ran a race. A race from which women were banned. (Despite being told that her uterus would fall out.)
It happened once, that a woman burned her bra and refused to shave her legs to please society.
It happened once, that a woman won the right to be funded and recognized for her athletic prowess.
I have witnessed the women of my generation through the former eyes of my young self, and the older, wiser eyes of my present self, and many times through the eyes of a feminist, but always with the eyes of a humanist.
Today, I witness our daughters who run faster, play harder and, although naive about their mother's fight, know at least- that their uteruses are safe.
Today, I witness our daughters divide, allowing themselves to be raped by society as they shave, pluck, and accessorize, lost again in a plastic ideology.
Today, I witness for our daughters it is socially acceptable and deemed even desirable to nourish a machine of narcissism, where misogynists skyrocket to fame on a shooting star of lyrical, female debasement.
Today, I witness organizations that used to mean something become a shell of their former selves as they stand on a street corner to sell their souls to the highest corporate bidder.
I witness a generation of ghetto, yuppie "bitches" and "ho's" who neither ask nor are taken seriously Fighting for the right to self-mutilate on prime time as they are urinated upon by the masses and there is a thunder of applause.
Succeeding in a convenient abortion of the spirit as a means of control for the uncontrollable.
And politicians lick their lips and stare into the eyes of a woman wearing a shroud.
And in this generation what started as a wildfire dies in their daughters with a whimper.
I say to you- If a generation of women found a way to open the door maybe, the next generation can find the way through.
