The Burning Times

The Burning Times
For all the women healers,
midwives, and wise women.
For all the secrets and mysteries
of the magical arts.
For the nature mystics,
and practitioners of herb-craft.
For the Goddess, the Priestess,
and the rituals of the natural cycle.
For the old women,
the mothers, and their children.
For the Inquisitors' quest
to sever a woman's spiritual vision.
For the vaginal holocaust.
For the aura of contamination
from the Malleus Maleficarum
that designated woman a carnal abomination:
"a creature weak of mind and body,
a vessel more susceptible to evil than man."
For all the hysterical, irrational fear,
and the denigration of an entire gender.
For all the women, naked, bound,
examined, and tortured.
For all the rapes, sexual huminliation,
and tens of thousands of confessions,
in a strange revolution against women,
punished for doing man-practices
of alchemy, medicine, and philosophy.
Persecuted for seeking knowledge
of herbs, nature, and the stars.
For all the broomstick rides,
and dancing naked at Sabbats.
For the misogynistic agenda
that echoes still today.
For the rack, the strappado,
the Witch-Towers, and the caspie claws.
For all of the women
put to "The Question"
from the Witch of Endor,
to Joan of Arc,
to Rebecca Nurse of Salem.
And centuries later,
as the wind pulls tight
across the plane of female energy,
you can still hear the cries,
still smell burning flesh.
Today, I will sing down the moon,
and all will know what I am.
It is for all of the suffering,
all of the pain,
and all of the dying done by women
named witches
that I say,
Call me Witch.
