Song of the Ancient Mysteries

by Helio
 Age Group: Adult

‘Song of the Ancient Mysteries’
All the night I sit and write No words can bear my soul Shadows still And begin to fill My mind a gaping hole Let us begin, A song to sing A tale yet to be told
The Moon was bright, Brought forth light I sat in evening shade The piper’s flute, I heard it tout Of rustic wood ‘twas made Against a tree, I stood to see The piper come across the glade
This jolly man ‘Twas happy Pan Horns upon his head He danced about And gave a shout A yowl of painful dread He beckoned me To come be free And off he with me he lead
Into a grove Whither no beast doth rove Was a party and a feast Sitting alone Upon his throne Sat Bacchus of the East Oh the Lord Whom a boar had gored Brought forth holy yeast
With this bread The bacchants were fed His flesh ‘twas the loaf we ate From a golden cup He had us sup The drink our thirst did sate His blood divine We drank was wine Freed us from false fate
The Great Mother came A pretty dame She taught us of the Earth Rhea’s kiss Brought us bliss There was never so much mirth A tale she told It was quite old Of how to the gods she gave birth
We loved to see The Lord full of glee Hard to believe from a tree he hanged In Thebes he taught the vine And the ivy sign ‘Twas when King Pentheus reigned He had Dionysus killed His blood spilled But godhood Dionysus gained
Into the Under-realm The Lord did overwhelm Persephone with a myrtle bough Freeing Semele, his mother A virgin like no other To heaven they did go And to this we praise The Lord’s rising after three days He is the seed we sow
And so I send This tale now at end To all who like a song I now depart Like Love’s keen dart With hopes I’ve done none wrong So Farewell Till I’ve more to tell Perhaps ‘twill not be long
