Fate, Fortune, & Divine Retribution
Age Group: Adult
De Natura Fatae Fortunae et retributiinis divini
‘About the Nature of Fate, Fortune, and Divine Retribution’
It is said that Fortune is blind, but I believe she is also deaf; for she knows not that she really has no control of fate. The three sisters of Fate spin the web of men’s lives; all that they decide upon is done purposefully. All good and ill that befalls mankind has a reason behind it, for the Fates are the hands of the Logos, which emanates from the Great Mystery. Why then does Fortune exist if her powers are for nothing? The Fates are too far beyond the comprehension of the common man, so they have placed Fortune in a position in the lives of common folk. Fortune or Luck is what men call the randomness of existence. For common folk are so dense that they believe that all events are purely based on random chance. It is beyond them to know that the Fates have preordained every event that happens in one’s life; there is no chance or luck in reality, these are but illusions. The wise men know that all choices they make and all events in their lives have been predestined for them. The Fates have already formed the whole destinies of universes, past and present and future. Common men believe that destiny is random, because fortune blindly spins her wheel. Common folk also foolishly believe that Fortune controls fate. Fools! As I have said, Fortune is not only blind but also deaf, for how else could she be so foolish to continue to spin her wheel even though it is the Fates and not her that control destiny. The Fates have made her blind and deaf, so that she can never know the truth. The other gods stand about and laugh at Fortune’s foolishness. Fortune, however, thinks very highly of herself and demands the respect of mortals. Common men all bow before her, even though they alternate between loving her and hating her; but wise men spit in her face, and scoff at her attempts to bring them misfortune, for they know themselves to be beyond her. The wise walk forward (or backward) with one hand grasping their strand of fate. Fortune spins her wheel with glee, waiting to bestow good or ill upon us. What common men fear more than Fortune is her sister Divine Retribution. When Divine Retribution comes around, men flee to Fortune and hide under her cloak. It is said that those who Fortune does not favor are loved by Divine Retribution who tries very hard to get the down trodden what they deserve. The common folk believe that wise men, who spit in the face of Fortune, have the most to fear from Divine Retribution. But Divine Retribution is the servant of philosophers, who she views as highly as gods. It is these wise philosophers who took Divine Retribution in and bathed, clothed, and fed her. She is like a daughter to them, for they also named her. Divine Retribution has often been confused with jealousy or envy, but the jealous and envious know not what Divine Retribution’s sweet presence feels like. The jealous and envious have only ever seen her backside and never her beautiful smile. Those who Divine Retribution hates most are those who are full of hubris. Those who display hubris think far to highly of themselves and put themselves before the gods. Hubris is the ultimate arrogance. Fortune greatly favors those who are full of hubris, because she thinks that she herself is the only god (because she is blind and deaf) . What causes Fortune to be both blind and deaf you might ask? It is her genealogy. She is the daughter of Aphrodite and Hermes; Aphrodite is love and love is blind, and Hermes is wisdom, which is deaf to vulgar mundanities. Those full of hubris are tortured and often beheaded by Divine Retribution. Common men so fear and loathe her that they give her name to anyone they view as their primary antagonist; this they refer to as their ‘Nemesis.’ Divine Retribution is a beautiful maiden who wields a whip and blade. It is said that she once had Fortune’s job, but being neither blind nor deaf she easily realized her folly and instead took up the cause of enacting justice. Some say she is the arrow that has been let fly from the bow of Artemis, but in reality they are one and the same goddess. Only the wise and the lovers of nature (often the same) know this fact. Artemis does not like to come into the territory of man and so often when she does it is in the form of this whip wielding, winged bringer of justice. Artemis is the protectress of Nature; she bestows life and death, always keeping the world in balance. This is why she comes in the form of Divine Retribution, in order to keep balance. So the wise praise Divine Retribution the balancer, and scorn Fortune the arrogant.
Author's Notes: More prose that poetry but when I wrote this months ago I felt deeply inspired. Its a homage to ancient Greek philosophy; its a mix of Greek philosophy, myth, and a little bit of Gnosticism.
