Finding Salem

Age Group: Adult
Sometimes I find Salem still
swimming in some grocery
clerk’s eyes as she packs my
shredded wheat and glares
at my Goddess pendant dangling
at my breasts. I never look
for Salem but it somehow emerges
at most inconvenient times like
when I am applying for job
and the Ten Commandments
painted on real velvet and a
plastic Jesus hang just
above the interviewer’s head
as he tells me he just filled
the last vacancy with a nice lady
from the Church of All Our
Salvation OR Burn Temple of
the Almighty. Like a witch’s
hanging tree, I find Salem
trying to condemn me to hang
in a cold wind while cupboards
grow bare and money thinner.
Free bread is only given to
those who know how to hail
Mary or take the body of
their Christ ritually. They would
have all Pagan women eat
Jesus on our knees,
smacking our lips and shouting
thanks while pretending awe
as we swallow his bitter sperm,
swallow his hard people and
and hope the nausea settles
before they all return as bile
darkness over our lips and
back into the earth who would
cover it all in brown comfort.
I find Salem in the frightened
ignorant faces of their daughters
who think it a sin to embrace
passion, raise it high within
them and make it a mantra,
a sin to let passion spill joy
and wonder everywhere a woman
would will it and let it renew her.
I find Salem stealthily seated
in our halls of injustice on the
judicial benches and in the
congressional seats where
freedom is only for the accusers
and oppressors and the torches are
still lit for those of us who revere
earth mysteries and know how to
dance circles under a full
moon in groves made sacred
simply by being there and
being better than any sacrament
handed to us by a man who thinks
love and loving is a sin condemning
us all to burning pits forever.
Finding Salem is easy.
Making your way through
it intact and unburned
is the challenge.
