Little Sister of the Sorrows

Little Sister of the Sorrows,
I thought of you while I was dancing a dark moon,
making ever widening circles round an ancient Yew.
I was whirling like a Dervish when I remembered
how you laughed at me one sun filled Saturday
as I was raging against reason- always
you laugh then gently shake your head
afterward as if reflecting on both the wonders
and the sorrows lining your moment of lightness.
I thought of you every time my bare feet
touched Mother Earth, every time owl called out
sweet promises chasing away the cold of tomorrow.
I thought of you whenever the bonfire flared
chasing shadows back into ever deepening
forest and I remembered your smile, a beacon
that sent everyone’s blues
scurrying into shadows.
Ah, Little Sister of the Sorrows,
I thought of you as I sent prayers and prayed
spells in a dark wood on a darker night
than ever I wanted you to find. I prayed
open roads for you made of rainbows rolling
wide and long under Patchouli skies
where the only road signs are sunflowers
because you know where you going
and need no sign to tell you.
I thought of you as ashes rose
above the fire leaping ever upward
and I prayed another spell to give you
wings of butterflies, body free of bonds.
Little Sister of the Sorrows,
while I danced the Old Ways on a
dark night in deep woods, I thought
of you lying in that cold room listening
to machines breathe for you, bleed for you.
I thought of you and
prayed for your swift joyous flight
down pain free passages of being.
