Funeral for a Familiar

by Llysse Smith Wylle
 Age Group: Adult

Dig the grave well, neither wide nor deep, Where ye shall lay your little friend to sleep Within the northern lee of standing stones, So hidden from the sun shall be her bones. Then bless the ground Three times round And weep, and weep For she is bound Beyond the veil, and company can’t keep.
Light four candles. Tapers, waxy white, Illuminate her journey into night, A destination whence ye cannot go Until your waters ebb, and cease to flow. Now lay her down— So gently down! The earth is right To be her gown, Rich cover, ‘neath which sleeps your heart’s delight.

About the Author:
Llysse Smith Wylle has been Pagan for many years and Wiccan for seven. She is a member of the Third Circle of the Tradition of Universal Eclectic Wicca; she also teaches and coordinates its First Circle degree via the Coven of the Far Flung Net. For a number of years, she has studied Chaos and other magical techniques privately, as well as with a small esoteric study society called the Order of the Golden Breath.
In addition to teaching online, Ms. Wylle has also been a teacher of English at an elite private school in China. Her experiences as a writer are wide-ranging, as well: she’s worked professionally as a journalist, an editor, a communications director, a PR manager and an online communications manager. Plus, for nearly as long as she could hold a pencil, Ms. Wylle has written poetry. That passion continues today, even if she has exchanged the worn pencil for a shiny laptop.
Ms. Wylle lives in a ridge top cottage with her husband and a menagerie of chickens, cats, goats, fish and budgies, as well as a rotating cast of sick and injured wild creatures that she directs to the care of animal rehabilitation specialists.
