Embrace

by Tree Higgins
 Age Group: Adult

A long climb... booted feet slipping on rain-dampened rocks gloved hands grasping places felt before seen. This morning a peak beckoned as I passed by motioned me onward with whispered promises of places seldom seen. I had stopped my car, hearing earth's voice urging me to climb this raw untamed place. Half way up, I perched on a rocky outcropping, sipping Gatorade humming in tune with the voice only I could hear... that call of a mountain, that call of an expectant lover. Ignoring torn jeans, I crawled a path too steep to walk, stones bit my shins and scraped my arms- I paid no attention. My hands bled on sharp ledges I traversed- Still I paid no heed. The hunger for the peak drowned my pains. I danced with obsession, (a most formidable partner.) As sun started its downward climb across the horizon, I pulled my aging body over the last edge and filled my eyes... on twelve feet of granite, bald but for one forlorn laurel waving in the wind. I stood up and wondered why this sudden obsession? Why this climb now? Why now when no one knew where I was or what I was doing? and where no person came? Bent my head I did in weary wonder, question upon question to myself, question of reasonableness, of sanity, of choices, (both this choice and others) , then a gentle wind moved across my face, lifting hair from my eyes and the mountain's song began again in my heart. I looked up across clear skies and found mountain after mountain reaching up embracing life itself. It is an eternal dance that sweeps through rivers and people, through valleys and mountains, through nameless places and times. This mountain and her sisters were all embracing creation and uncreation and everything between. I raised my arms over my head and tried to embrace clouds, a simple gesture but the hardest one of all... for in the clear skies I saw myself and mountains embracing our great Goddess with reverence and found within my embracing arms a moment of unbounded joy.
Author's Notes: Sometimes, we just have to do a sudden, seemingly unreasonable thing...like climb a peak on the spur of a moment. Sometimes, if we are lucky, we find out why the thing we have done really wasn't so unreasonable after all. Tree
