Lifted to a Higher Place

I was sitting in the dark
wishing for a lightning bolt
to do the deed I lacked the courage to do
when I heard your cries
Mourning my own small losses
when I saw yours were even tougher
My heart was broken
yours was burnt bad
your daily courage
your constant struggle
chased away my fears
and gave big wings to my weakness
I had a little food in my bag
you hadn't eaten in days
when I gave you my food
I was filled
I gave you my coat
and I was warmed
and when I listened to your story
my sad tale got a sunrise
we are not meant to go alone the whole way
I think that's why we have hands to reach each other
and eyes to meet
alone we whither and fade
sharing space we can see the whole rainbow
share a bowl and some words
and suddenly it's not so cold out
and the world seems greener
and our hearts get stronger
and our needs aren't so needy
caring for you
brings me to a higher place
feeding you
I'll never run out
listening to you
gives me the guts
to fire up my pen
to tell those hard stories
maybe someone will hear
and rise up with their own wings
when they were sitting in the dark
waiting for a lightening bolt
and you and I can feed them
and give them our coats.
