Our Mothers and Their Mothers

by Sister Eve
 Age Group: Adult

Being one of a kind has become so precious to us that we’ve run off our Mothers trying to prove we can make it without them. Of course we can’t- it’s not meant to be.
If one or two humans could haul the collective load, why, there wouldn’t be so many of us. We wouldn’t be programmed so strongly toward tribal survival and procreation. Don’t close yer heart’s eye to the paths that sweat and care have helped clear for you. My tears and skin have no less value because they fall into the cracks of these old wooden floors to keep company with that of other maids, mothers and crones. Quite the contrary. You stand as tall as you do, you think as well as you do- better than those before you because of their stumbling struggles. Generation after generation of sisters, all trying to make life a little better for the next group than what they had. I say use it, shed a grateful tear for it. Spend some time on it.
If leaning on the fences and wisdom that my Mothers before me built makes me weak and vulnerable, then there must be powerful magic in that vulnerability! Never, when I can picture their small shoulders carrying heavier loads than I can physically imagine- their small calloused feet in bad shoes or sandals doing all those hard jobs and still making time to build communities, to love and sing to and teach their children, to cook healthy warm food over a fire and oil… Never does that weaken me. It only makes me stronger. E
