The Emporium Of Curious Goods
Proprietor: Barrett Ravenhurst, Ph.D.
Telephone: (570) 325 4038
Located in: Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania
Shop Profile: The owner has a Ph.D. in Comparative religion and has always been interested in the relationship between magic and religion. He was a sucessful professional magician for 30 years (now retired from the stage) ! Because of his previous work, he is a bit of a skeptic for all things paranormal, but the first one to admit that there is so much we as humans do not know . He likes to investigate cases and make his own conclusions. Because of his stage magic background he realizes that many people can be fooled into believing things that are not so. A cleaver magician can create a great many "illusions" in order to bring about the false claim of the paranormal. People have done this for monetary gain and have often succeded in fooling legitimate investigators who are not familiar with "magical principles" of the stage magician. The great magician Houdini used his talents in the same way, exposing many fake spiritualist mediums of his time. This type of investigation takes a trained eye, and not something just anyone can do. He is listed in "Marqui's "Who's Who In America". Dr. Ravenhurst is quite an authority on Wicca and is , and has been , available for consultations by police depts., movie companies, etc. The Emporium Of Curious Goods is the largest New Age shop in N. E. Pa.! It has a large Wiccan and alternative lifestyle patronage, as well as tourists. Jim Thorpe, Pa. is a small Swiss-like Victorian tourist town nestled in the Pocono Mts. The famous Native American athelete, Jim Thorpe is buried there, hence the name of the town! The town was featured in the 1960's blockbuster movie, "The Molly McGuires" as well as a national TV commercial and a made for TV movie, "You Can't Go Home Again"! It is not unusual to see famous movie or TV stars walking the streets. Jim Thorpe, Pa., is home to the famous "handprint on the wall" in a Victorian jail cell (featured in many TV specials on ghosts) , and is home to the mansion of Victorian millionaire, Asa Packer, founder of the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Lehigh University, among many other institutions!
The Emporium features a large selection of incense, oils, herbs, gargoyles, God/Goddess statues, plus Hindu and Egyptian Gods/Goddesses, Jewish items and Catholic statues and saints. Because of the owners background in comparative religion, many major world religions are represented herein. The shop carries about a 500 book selection on most metaphysical subjects. Also, you can purchase your athame or coven sword from a huge inventory of these objects. You will always be in fashion when you visit our clothing center where we feature Gothic, Wiccan, Victorian, Ren. Faire clothing plus a selection of capes and robes.
The shop was featured on TLC TV's, "A Dating Story", which will be in reruns for the next few years!
If your lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the ghost cat who roams its' rooms! Children, in particular, seem to see it!
