Rites of Passage for all stages of life

Offered by: Walking Tree

Located in: Bangor, Maine

Skill/Service Details: Rites of passage have been used for centuries to celebrate and delineate distinct points of physical, emotional, spiritual, social or psychological transition. Transition is about moving form one social role to another; from child to teenager, from girl to woman, from man or woman to parent or from parent to grandparent. Transition can be felt when a person retires, adopts a child, moves to a new state, marries, divorces, graduates, releases old wounds, or comes out of the closet. Why are these situations considered transitions? Because with each life change new expectations of self and new social obligations arise.

Rites of passage are designed to introduce the individual to his or her social group by symbolically representing the new social status. Symbolically leaving behind the old state and entering into a new state can help reinforce the new status, both in the eyes of the individual and the group. A successful rite of passage helps both the individual and the group change behavior to appropriately match the new social status of the individual. “…the purpose and actual effect of these was to conduct people across those difficult thresholds of transformation that demand a change in the patterns not only of conscious but also of unconscious life” (Jung, 1972, p. 10) .

Rites of Passage with which I currently offer include:
• Children’s changes in age and responsibility
• Menarche
• Birth
• Adoption
• Croning or Menopause
• Parenthood (for father and/or mother)
• Naming ceremonies
• Coming out of the closet
• Transgender transitions
• Weddings
• Handfastings
• Returning from Active Duty
• Divorce
• Moving
• Major life changes (such as career changes or promotions)
• Retirement
• Releasing old pain
• Cancer or other disease remissions
• Funerals
• Graduation
• Spiritual awakening

The list above is far from exhaustive. I welcome the opportunity to create a rite of passage that is unique for your personal life transition.

Rates: Fees are on a sliding scale to accomodate all income levels. Base rate is is determined by the complexity and length of the ritual and includes cost of supplies.
