Skill/Service Details: DONA International’s definition of a Doula is someone who “provides the woman and her husband or partner continuous emotional support, physical comfort and assistance in obtaining information before, during and just after childbirth."
To me, this means maintaining and preserving the sacred space in which a woman births.
Sacred space is not simply a physical location; it also means feeling emotionally safe and cared for, psychologically self assured and supported, and connected to loved ones and care givers both physically and spiritually.
As a doula I provide the following services and utilize the following skills:
• Physical comfort measures from backrubs and foot massages to hair brushing, hand holding and singing lullabies.
• Information on the process of birth, including physical and mental stages of development
• Knowledge of common medical pain treatment as well as non-medical pain management techniques
• Understanding of medical interventions and induction methods
• Assistance in developing a personalized birth plan
• Continuous support to birthing mother and partner (s) throughout labor
• Facilitation of communication between the laboring woman, her partner and clinical care providers
• Respect for any and all religious beliefs and preferences
• Emotional and physical support post partum including light housekeeping, parenting tips, and holding the baby while mom naps.
• Knowledge of birthing rituals and ability to create a personalized birthing ritual for the new family
• On call support for two weeks before the due date until the birth
• In hospital or home birth support
• Reiki I attuned
Doula services can include as few as 2 or as many as 8 2 supportive meetings with mother and partner (s) which can be scheduled both before and after the birth. If 2 visits is the preference, both must be scheduled prior to the birth.
Parents also have the option of including facilitated rites of passage for their family before and after the birth. Making the transition from parent to grandparent, from adult to parent or from only child to oldest sibling is a big step. Rites of passage can create the psychological change needed for the smooth shift of roles. Also, rites of passage such as a naming ceremony introduce the new baby to the family and community.
It is important to note that a doula IS NOT a midwife, gynecologist or obstetrician and does not provide medical services.
Rates: Fees are on a sliding scale to accomodate all financial needs. Base rate is determined by the number of supportive meetings and inclusion of rites of passage.
